Sonne statt Reagan - the worst music video ever...?

Joseph Beuys, godfather of ritualistic public performance art in Germany (1960s to 1980s) was also a big opponent of nuclear weapons and campaigned for environmental causes. He even got elected as a Green Party candidate for the European Parliament.

This video shows him attempting to be a pop singer for the Green Party, singing his song 'Sonne statt Reagan' (Reagan in German sounds like 'Regen', rain) attacks Ronald Reagan*s arms policy. The song was issued as a record and Beuys appeared before big audiences with it during the peace movement's demonstrations.

Watching this video, you may notice how badly made it appears and I always break out in laughter when I observe the different people in it, acting like they don*t really know whats going on. But let*s not forget it was made in 1982, a mere 9 months after MTV was born.

Observe Beuys closely, he really feels so out of place. Not only because someone came up with the almost brilliant idea of putting him behind the band, but also because he isn*t really supposed to be a wild rockstar. In the end at least he tries to swing the microphone around and is visibly delighted to do so.
Also notice the decent female background singers. How neat! Also, all the participants of the video were members of the Green Party. The place to be if you were hip... well.

enjoy the lyrics here:

Aus dem Land das sich selbst zerstört

und uns den "way of life" Diktiert

da kommt Reagan und bringt Waffen und Tod

und hört er Frieden sieht er rot.

Er sagt als Präsident von USA

Atomkrieg? - Ja bitte dort und da

ob Polen Mittler Osten Nicaragua

er will den Endsieg das ist doch klar.

Doch wir wollen: Sonne statt Reagan

ohne Rüstung leben!

Ob West ob Ost

auf Raketen muß Rost!

wir wollen: Sonne statt Reagan

ohne Rüstung leben!

Ob West ob Ost

auf Raketen muß Rost!

Er will die Säcke im Osten reizen

die auch nicht mit Atomen geizen

doch dein Krieg um hirnverbrannte Ziele

der läuft nicht Reagan - wir sind viele!

Hau ab mit deinen Nuklearstrategen

deinen Russenhassern deinem Strahlenregen

Mensch Knitterface der Film ist aus

nimm' die Raketen mit nach Haus!

Denn wir wollen: Sonne statt Reagan

ohne Rüstung leben!

Ob Ost ob West

Kalten Kriegern die Pest!

C42 - Espace Citroën

The new Citroën showroom in Paris, known simply as C42, named for its location at number 42 on the Champs-Élysées.

When it was built in 1927, the original Citroën dealership at this location was a marvel of style and elegance, with a large glass entrance perfectly framing the cars inside. But by the 1980s the original showroom was gone, replaced by a chain restaurant with a half-hearted section devoted to Citroën. It was shorter than the surrounding buildings, and was overshadowed by Citroën’s long history of innovative marketing.

“It was a very long experience,” said architect Gautrand, referring to the construction project. City regulations meant that the Metro station directly in front of C42 could not be closed, and the sidewalk had to remain accessible to pedestrians at all times.
The glass latticework — each section weighing four to six tons — had to be trucked in at 1:00 a.m. Since heavy equipment and trucks had to be cleared from the busy street in time for the morning rush hour, that left only five hours to unload the glass each day.

A full-size model of a DS sedan transforms into what Citroën calls its Totem Mobile, which was introduced at the Paris Motor Show last year. Designed by the American artist Chico MacMurtrie, the Totem Mobile splits open and expands skyward, stretching 60 feet at full height.

Grand Palais - Big Blonde and Beautiful!

Grand Palais
1900
Henri Deglane, Louis Albert Louvet, Charles Louis Girault, and Albert Théophile Félix Thomas
After being closed for 12 years for extensive restoration work after one of the glass ceiling panels fell in 1993, the Grand Palais reopened in September 2005. But the restoration work is still going on, since the buildings facade only had been restored to its beauty on the front elevation. The sides are still getting work done, and the building*s "butt", which is also an exhibition palace called Palais de la Découverte, is getting a long needed restoration and its facades are currently covered in an extensive scaffolding.

The Grand Palais is currently the largest existing ironwork and glass structure in the world, a title once held by London’s Crystal Palace, which was lost in a fire.
It boasts 9,400 tons of steel framework, 15,000 sq. meter (162,000 sq ft) of glass, and about 5,000 square meter (5,400 sq ft) of galvanized iron/zinc roofing.

Originally intended to host art exhibitions (Salons) - all the rage in the early 20th century - it also welcomed, in 1901, the first Automobile Show (an industrial sector in which France was then a pioneer) and has since served as the venue for more technological events, such as the first Aeronautics Salon (featuring hot-air balloons), the Childhood Fair, and the Household Arts Show, as well as agricultural shows, circuses, horse shows, operas and even a ski run.

note the restored mosaics above the monumental doors, also recently renovated

The mosaic frieses on the building were completed repaired and restored, with the 1200 different colours in the designs carefully matched. Once again, the previous ages of culture and arts are clearly pictured - from Egyptians, Greeks, Romans, to the Renaissance.

This is the Seine side, which is still awaiting its restoration

The South pavillion of the Palais de la Découverte, desperately in need also. Check the bad condition the stone is in on the close-ups further down
One can imagine in what bad shape the whole building was in, considering the facts that throughout WWI, the Grand Palais sheltered colonial troupes heading to the front and later served as a hospital. Bombarded during WWII, the structure served as a truck depot, and was partially burned down in 1944 during the combat to liberate Paris.

Can I Get An Amen?

Nate Harrison
Can I Get An Amen?

2004
A critical perspective of perhaps the most sampled drum beat in the history of recorded music, the Amen Break. It begins with the pop track Amen Brother by 60's soul band The Winstons, and traces the transformation of their drum solo from its original context as part of a 'B' side vinyl single into its use as a key aural ingredient in contemporary cultural expression.

I am Cedric, discoverer of things that would go unnoticed in the streets of Paris, historic haven of fashionistas and city of lights ('lights' as in 'enlightenment', not street lights).
But seriously: I'm an expat from Luxembourg (the country, not the garden), living in the center of Paris (hence 'Paris 2nd arrondissement'), and currenlty studying architectural history...
