The Paris Sidewalks of Yesterday*s Future

Believe it or not, in 1900 Paris had moving sidewalks!
These got installed for the visitors of the 1900 Paris World Fair

The New York Observer quotes in his edition of October 18th:
"It consists of three elevated platforms, the first being stationary, the second moving at a moderate rate of speed, and the third at the rate of about six miles an hour. The moving sidewalks have upright posts with knobbed tops by which one can steady himself in passing to or from the platforms. There are occasional seats on these platforms, and the circuit of the Exposition can be made with rapidity and ease by this contrivance. It also affords a good deal of fun, for most of the visitors are unfamiliar with this mode of transit, and are awkward in its use."

Check out this film of Edison made of the Paris moving sidewalks.

If this method of transportation would have prevailed and the funding would have been present, the streets of Paris might soon have looked like on this illustration of the early 20th century. A city with elevated moving platforms.

I am Cedric, discoverer of things that would go unnoticed in the streets of Paris, historic haven of fashionistas and city of lights ('lights' as in 'enlightenment', not street lights).
But seriously: I'm an expat from Luxembourg (the country, not the garden), living in the center of Paris (hence 'Paris 2nd arrondissement'), and currenlty studying architectural history...
