On a corner on 5th avenue, where the high-end luxury goods stores hang around, stand 2 grand old luxury hotels, face to face, looking like 2 rivals with almost the same exterior appearance. On one side the St. Regis, on the other side the Peninsula.

The St. Regis, with his distinctly parisian facade, was a venture built by J.J.Astor in 1904. Also famous for the King Cole Bar with its painted walls (formerly kept at the bar of the Knickerbocker Hotel, another Astor venture)

On the other corner, the Peninsula stands in all its neoclassical renaissance splendor. This hotel got built in 1905, about one year after the St. Regis.
Since that time, these 2 mastodons stand strong, overlooking each other's activities, and sometimes even confusing their guests to the point that a St. Regian wanders into the Peninsula without noticing he walked to the wrong side of the intersection.
