Correspondences Musée d'Orsay / Contemporary Art

We all love kitsch don't we? Don't we??
Most of all if it's sexy homoerotic kitsch with a taste of glamour:
Take a look at these works by Pierre et Gilles currently on display at Musée d'Orsay!

Pierre and Gilles, "Abel"

Vincent Feugère des Forts, "The Death of Abel"

The goal of those exhibitions is to invite a contemporary artist who chooses a work from the museum and presents one of his own works beside it. The dialogue between the two creates the double possibility of seeing the collections in another light and giving a different resonance to their modernity.

The exhibition is still visible form 20 February - 20 May 2007! So hurry up for the precious kitsch!

Parfaitement, monsieur le premier ministre!

This is the 1988 French televised presidential debate: opposing president Mitterand to his prime minister, Chirac.

Mitterand starts hitting on Chirac, to which chirac replies: " tonight I'm not the prime minister, and you are not the president, we are merely 2 candidates (on equal first round percentage points). you may permit me then to call you 'monsieur' Mitterand "

To which Mitterand replies: " and you are absolutely right to do so, mister prime minister!"

The expression on Mitterands face on the second after this is just priceless...

Palais Royal - Blowing in the wind

Here they are, Palais Royal's new inflatable condoms!
They are actually part of an exhibition by korean artist Shim Moon Seup...

And here we have the canon of the Palais Royal, supposed to sound on noon every day from 1786 till 1914, but it has been out of order for a very long time now

There is an inscription on it: "Horas non numero nisi serenas" meaning 'I only count the serene hours'. Those times have gone since 1914.

Is there a life outside of my appartment?

"Hell is other people!"

I'd like to see hell then, 'cause I've been inside these walls for the whole day. If it weren't for that window and this magic internet connection, it would feel like Guantanamo Bay... without the orange suits. Damn my exam revisions! Damn the 18th century!

I opened the window earlier, and the fresh air was reinvigorating my senses. At least I get some interaction by this blog, but it somehow feels very one-sided. Maybe no one reads this stuff. Maybe no one cares. Nobody cares about blogs, everyone has one, you just browse as if it was a supermarket.... where am I going with this? No idea, but I need to get some writing exercise.

I want to start painting some more, do portraits and ink drawings.

I close my eyes and my head starts to turn around, I nearly collapsed a few minutes ago.

I gotta get out tomorrow, or else I start to create an imaginary friend in a parallel universe and then go wondering why the hell I can't see him...

And I'm out of toilet paper and post-its fyi.

Another night of stalking and art openings

Tonight, opening at Galerie Yvon Lambert! (something arty on the walls I think)

Fun fun fun, but nothing to drink. Most openings were on the other side of the river, and we were lazy asses and wanted to stay central...

But still, we met the usual people: I had my weekly glimpse at Andrée Putman once again (tradition oblige) and we also saw famous architect Jean Nouvel, and an impromptu visit by french prime minister Dominique de Villepin, together with his bodyguards...

here it is, the weekly Andrée Putman shot...

a very blurry Dominique de Villepin in casual dress...

BTW, Jazon, I think I found your marbles! They were behind my sofa the whole time.

Afterwards, some midnight shopping with Delphine

I'm gonna buy these babies sometime soon! (yes, they're shiny...)

Joe Colombo - Inventing the future

The Musée des Arts décoratifs of Paris is hosting the first international retrospective of the work of one of the most brilliant creators of his time, italian designer Joe Colombo (1930-1971) , from 29 March - 19 August 2007.
So if you like futuristic ceiling televisions, pivoting walls with built-in minibar, underground ‘nuclear’ towns, come and see the show!
For more on the exhibition, see this page (french only, sorry) with some pictures.

A day of extreme studying at the Louvre

You know Paris's number one tourist trap, the Louvre. People come together here. For their love of art. Or so it seems. Today was more a day of shouting and screaming: tourists screaming, children shouting, strollers strolling - too many people, as usual during a holiday break (or just any usual day).
This used to be a place where people come to contemplate, now it is a big tourist machine, serving more than 7 million people a year.
Why not make it a slogan, like mc donalds:

The LOUVRE - 7 millions served!

And in the middle of it: we the students, trying to study for our exams in front of the artwork, surrounded by the noise made by one-day tourists from all over the globe: It's fucking Babel!
It got forbidden recently to take pictures in the most crowded rooms (certainly for circulation issues); when will they forbid people to shout?

So today I spent nearly 8 hours inside the Louvre with a friend of mine, working on Italian, Spanish and french paintings... and I nearly lost my voice from all the talk.

Only 17 days to go before exams start!

I am Cedric, discoverer of things that would go unnoticed in the streets of Paris, historic haven of fashionistas and city of lights ('lights' as in 'enlightenment', not street lights).
But seriously: I'm an expat from Luxembourg (the country, not the garden), living in the center of Paris (hence 'Paris 2nd arrondissement'), and currenlty studying architectural history...
